Memories of September 11, 2001 by Kim Gordon

What do you remember about September 11th, 2001 and the days afterward?

For those of us who lived out of state when the trade towers were hit, our experiences were vastly different. We have our memories that were mostly shaped by television coverage and the reactions within our own communities.

But Kim Gordon, formerly of Sonic Youth, lived in New York City at the time and shares a little about what that time was like in her recent memoir, "Girl in a Band".

"It was a surreal, terrifying day. People....were wandering around... in a daze."

"The next morning...the streets were empty. I got very emotional thinking about New York as I looked down to where the towers once were and I saw a big nothing. It felt like the end."

 "Every morning I got up early and turned on CNN just to make sure nothing else had happened, and I woke up in the middle of the night, too. This is still my sleep pattern."

"Later I found out that most of the power downtown in the financial district ran directly underneath Murray Street....Murray Street itself had chain-link fencing on both sides of the sidewalk and for months it was one big gaping hole, with the sidewalks and pavement regularly wetted down to dissolve the dust still permeating the air. 'Is this to wash away the dust of all the people killed in the towers?' I kept thinking."

It's hard to imagine being so close to the events that changed our world that tragic day.

Fond Farewell - MCA Adam Yauch (1964 - 2012)

Brooklyn, New York City Rapper Adam Yauch has died after battling cancer for the last 3 years. His work with The Beastie Boys starting out as a hardcore punk band with albums like "Polly Wog Stew" that evolved into hip hop with a slew of hits such as "License to Ill", "Paul's Boutique," "Check Your Head" "Ill Communication, and "Hello Nasty”. Last month the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

 

But Adam was much more than a performer, he devoted time, energy, to fundraising efforts for such causes as freeing Tibet and environmental issues. He put together a series of concerts, for Tibetan Independence known as “The Tibetan Freedom Concerts” against Chinese oppression, as well as forming a successful motion pictures production company Oscilloscope Pictures.

Soul legend - Etta James dies with family by her side at 73.

Ms. James was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, she won 17 Blues Music Awards 6 Grammy’s and two of her songs were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

She is survived by her husband Artis Mills and two sons Donto and Sametto.

Fond Farewell - Orrin Tucker, Bandleader

Orrin Tucker, the famous bandleader has died at age 100. One of his most famous songs was "Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!" in 1939. He formed his band in 1933, in which played saxophone and sang the vocals until Wee Bonnie Baker started singing with them in 1938. Over his career, Orrin made over 70 records, 6 of which sold more than 1 million copies each.
