Mexican Funerary Art - Guide Dogs to the Underworld
Dogs
are commonly found in Mexican Funerary Art (as shown in these images
taken at the L.A. County Museum of Art.) During the 16th century it was
believed that dogs would guide the dead along the pathways to reach the
underworld, this is why many burials from this period were frequently found with dog skeletons.
